Cancer Treatment and Research Centre MedAustron

The Cancer Treatment and Research Centre MedAustron in Wiener Neustadt is unique in Austria and one of only six comparable centres worldwide. MedAustron treats patients with ion therapy, a complementary form of radiotherapy that enables personalised, highly precise local cancer treatment. The therapy can use either protons or carbon ions. Because of the physical properties of these particles, the radiation dose is concentrated almost entirely on the tumour, protecting surrounding tissue as much as possible. MedAustron also treats many children with brain tumours. Radiotherapy is the third pillar of cancer treatment alongside surgery and systemic therapy.

MedAustron operates as an independent outpatient clinic but is connected with hospitals, universities and research institutes in Austria and internationally. It is also a teaching and research site of Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences for radio-oncology and medical physics.

MedAustron’s mission is to combat cancer through advanced patient treatment, clinical studies, applied and basic research and knowledge transfer. More than 250 employees work to improve ion therapy, expand knowledge of how it works and make treatment accessible to more people.

“We are delighted that Ronald McDonald Haus Wiener Neustadt has enriched our neighbourhood. The first family moved in as soon as it opened and felt completely comfortable and secure. Ronald McDonald Haus Wiener Neustadt offers up to nine families a temporary home during treatment at MedAustron, which is incredibly valuable. This cooperation enables us to further improve the standard of care for our patients.”
